How We Build A Patio That Stays Flat

A patio is only as good as what’s under it. Central Illinois clay holds water and heaves every winter, so every F&W patio is built from the ground up:

1. Layout and grading so water drains away from your house and off the patio.
2. Excavation of sod and soft topsoil down to firm subgrade.
3. A compacted gravel base, laid and compacted in layers. This is the step that keeps pavers from settling and shifting.
4. A level bedding layer and the pavers or stone, cut cleanly to fit curves and borders.
5. Edge restraint and joint sand that lock the field together so it stays put through freeze-thaw cycles.

Choosing Patio Materials

• Concrete pavers: the most popular choice. Dozens of colors, shapes and textures, and individual pavers can be lifted and reset if anything ever needs repair.
• Natural stone: limestone and flagstone for a timeless, one-of-a-kind look.
• Brick: classic and warm; great for borders or traditional homes.
• Stamped concrete: the look of stone or pavers in a continuous slab, often a lower cost per square foot.
