A Finished Lawn In A Day
Sod is the fastest way to a usable, great-looking lawn. It covers bare construction lots, finishes the ground around new patios and walls, holds soil on slopes, and replaces areas lost to grubs, drainage problems or heavy wear. What makes it last is the prep underneath, so that is where we start.

Sod Or Seed?
Sod gives you a finished lawn the day it’s installed, holds soil on slopes right away, and is the best choice when you need a usable yard quickly, around a new patio, or where erosion is a problem. Seed costs less and is a good fit for thickening an existing lawn. For thin lawns that just need help, fall aeration and overseeding are usually the better value. We’ll tell you honestly which makes sense for your yard.
Soil Prep Is What Makes Sod Last
Sod laid on compacted construction clay struggles to root and dries out fast. Before any sod goes down, we remove old turf and debris, grade the area so water drains away from your house, and loosen and level the soil so roots can grow into it. Low spots and drainage problems get fixed first; see our drainage services and drainage solutions for clay soil.
Sod Care: The First Month
- Weeks 1 and 2: water every day so the sod and the soil underneath stay moist. Thin sod can dry out in a single hot afternoon.
- Weeks 3 and 4: cut back to deeper, less frequent watering as roots grow into the soil.
- First mow: once the sod is firmly rooted and won’t lift when you tug it, usually two to three weeks. Mow high.
- Foot traffic: keep it light for the first few weeks.
Spring and early fall are the easiest times to establish sod in Central Illinois. Summer installs work too, as long as the watering keeps up. An irrigation system takes the guesswork out.

Sod Installation FAQs
Straight answers about sod installation in Central Illinois: pricing, timing and what to expect.
Is sod better than seed?
Sod gives you a finished lawn immediately, controls erosion right away and is usable within a few weeks. Seed costs less and works well for thickening an existing lawn. For thin lawns, fall aeration and overseeding are usually the better value; for bare ground or a quick result, sod wins.
When is the best time to install sod in Central Illinois?
Spring and early fall are ideal because cooler temperatures and regular rain help sod root quickly. Sod can be installed in summer too, as long as it gets watered every day for the first couple of weeks.
How often should I water new sod?
Water every day for the first two weeks so the sod and the soil below stay moist, then switch to deeper, less frequent watering as the roots take hold over the next couple of weeks.
When can I mow new sod?
Usually after two to three weeks, once the sod is firmly rooted and doesn't lift when you tug on a corner. Keep the mower set high for the first few cuts.
Do you prepare the soil before laying sod?
Yes. We remove old turf and debris, grade for drainage and loosen and level the soil so the new roots can grow into it. Skipping prep is the most common reason sod fails on Central Illinois clay.
How much does sod installation cost?
Cost depends on the square footage, how much soil prep and grading the area needs, and access to the yard. We provide a free on-site quote so you know the full cost before work starts.
