Mulch Installation & Bed Maintenance in Bloomington-Normal
Fresh mulch, crisp edges and tidy beds make the whole property look cared for. We install mulch and keep landscape beds weeded, edged and trimmed for homes and businesses.
Neat, Healthy Landscape Beds All Season
Landscape beds are the frame around your home or building. A fresh layer of mulch holds moisture, slows weeds and protects roots, and a clean edge keeps the lawn and beds separate. We handle the whole job, from clearing out old debris to re-cutting edges and spreading new mulch at the right depth.

Why Mulch Matters On Clay Soil
A fresh layer of mulch does more than make beds look finished. It holds moisture through dry Central Illinois summers, keeps roots cooler, slows weeds, and breaks down over time to improve heavy clay soil. Shredded hardwood is our go-to for most beds because it stays put, knits together and fades evenly.
The right depth is about 2 to 3 inches. Too thin and weeds push through; too thick and it smothers roots. We keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and the base of shrubs, never piled up in a “volcano,” which invites rot and pests.
Edging That Keeps Beds Crisp
A clean, cut edge between lawn and bed is what makes a landscape look professionally kept. We re-cut bed edges each time we mulch so grass doesn’t creep in and mulch doesn’t wash out onto the lawn. For a permanent border, ask about stone or paver edging installed with our hardscape crews.
Bed Maintenance Through The Season
Mulch goes down best in spring as part of a spring clean-up, with a top-up in fall if beds look thin. Between visits we can keep beds weeded and shrubs shaped with shrub and hedge trimming. Mulch & Bed Maintenance FAQs
Straight answers about mulch & bed maintenance in Central Illinois: pricing, timing and what to expect.
How deep should mulch be?
About 2 to 3 inches. Thinner layers let weeds through and dry out quickly; deeper layers can smother roots. Mulch should be kept pulled back from tree trunks and the base of shrubs.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Most beds need a fresh layer once a year, usually in spring, with a light top-up in fall where it has thinned or washed out. Old mulch doesn't need to be removed unless it has built up too deep.
What type of mulch is best?
Shredded hardwood is our go-to for most Central Illinois beds because it stays in place, breaks down slowly and improves clay soil over time. River rock is a good choice in spots where mulch washes away.
Is mulch or rock better for landscape beds?
Mulch is better for plant health because it cools the soil and breaks down into organic matter. Rock lasts longer and works well along downspouts, foundations and slopes. Many properties use both.
Do you edge beds when you mulch?
Yes. We re-cut bed edges each time we mulch so grass stays out and the mulch stays in, which gives the whole yard a crisp, finished look.
How much does mulch installation cost?
Cost depends on the size and number of beds, the amount of mulch needed and how much clean-up is involved. We provide a free quote so you know the full cost before work starts.
